Geography Lesson

I am spouting off Australian States left and right and if I recall my knowledge prior to moving here, I had no idea where Queensland was in relation to Victoria, so here is an ugly handy map to study. It’s a handy dandy two tone colour, study it, and learn it feature to this blog. One thing to keep in mind is that Australia is the size of the United States, yet there are only 9 major cities listed on the continental map. This obviously isn’t because there are only 9 cities, but there are only 9 major cities here. To break this down in relative terms, imagine the U.S only had (loosely population wise so get out of your head environment, weather, coast, etc in comparison) the following cities in its great mass. So here we go, in order of largest city to smallest:

(I verified the populations so this is a pretty accurate comparison)

Sydney, New South Wales =  Los Angeles, California
Melbourne, Victoria = Chicago, Illinois
Brisbane, Queensland = Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Perth, Western Australia = Phoenix, Arizona
Adelaide, South Australia = Dallas, Texas
Canberra, New South Wales = Wichita, Kansas
Hobart, Tasmania = De Moines, Iowa
Cairns, Queensland = Thousand Oaks, California
Darwin, Northern Territory = Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Once again breaking it down:

American States Population: 303 Million human lives
Australian States Population:   20 Million human lives

Now imagine there was nothing else in the U.S other than those 9 U.S cities. Imagine the United States had only those cities, a few other sprouts, and all the rest a desolate, waterless, snake infested desert. Imagine if Thousand Oaks was a big star on the map of the U.S and had a big airport for people to fly in and out of internationally. Can you imagine if Wichita Kansas was the nation’s capitol? Imagine if everyone drove on the opposite side of the road and the country was circled by countless blood thirsty sharks and jelly fish. Imagine alllll the people! Sorry, I broke into song there, but maybe now you understand Australian geography more. Just like America though, amongst all the chaos, clamour of politics and those who hustle and bustle just to make a buck, you have wonderful people who make it all worth while.
